A reader asked how buying a U.S.-made toaster for $100 rather than an imported one for $50 helps America. I would answer that it creates private sector jobs and recirculates the money through our own economy. It also makes this country more self-reliant. Our labor participation rate is at historical lows as offshoring jobs has taken a toll. If those toasters lasted twice as long, it would also be financially advantageous, not to mention the disposal problems. We buy a lot of cheap products that don’t last.
I’m not a fan of Trump but I’ve heard leading Democrats echo the same sentiment regarding our imbalance of trade. It’s a delicate issue but one that needs to be addressed, hopefully with more diplomacy. We can’t keep piling on debt and relying on other nations for our needs.
