Editor,Â
I write in response to a recent letter in the San Mateo Daily Journal from Mr. Malcolm Robinson about local streets. I offer below a few clarifications to ensure your readers have accurate information.Â
El Camino Real has a long and storied history predating any of the current agencies in San Mateo County. It is also a state highway overseen by Caltrans, not by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority as incorrectly asserted in the letter. While the TA doesn’t manage this road, we do support numerous projects along it to improve mobility and safety for everyone, including pedestrians and cyclists. The TA is also currently assisting SamTrans on efforts to create a countywide vision for the corridor through the Grand Boulevard Initiative project.Â
Mr. Robinson’s letter also mentions Plan Bay Area 2050 and incorrectly attributes the plan to the TA. To clarify, the draft version of this plan is being developed by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the transportation planning agency for the entire Bay Area. While the TA collaborates regionally, we are not the lead agency on this in-progress effort. A draft release is expected this summer.Â
Finally, I note that sales tax funding overseen by the TA is directed to specific program and project categories identified in the voter-approved Measure A and Measure W expenditure plans. As the stewards of these funds, the TA is obligated to follow the guidelines previously set at the ballot box until voters decide otherwise.Â
Thank you for the important role your paper plays in informing the public, sparking civic conversation and creating a space for all voices to be heard.Â
