Editor,

San Mateans, our Public Works Commission will be having a public discussion 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, on small cell wireless facilities in our community. These small cells are now identified as 4G, but the rollout of 5G is currently in the works. This means hundreds of new small cell units in our city, and one on a pole near you.

And the idea that "we have 4G" coverage is a reason not to upgrade to 5G is Luddism of the first order. We're talking about orders of magnitude difference in data capacity.

The cellular companies are required by law to show need for coverage. Verizon has no need for additional 4G coverage, much less the far more intrusive 5G installations. 5G devices do not even exist. What's the rush to clutter our neighborhoods ? Tell the PWC that we do not want this in residential areas. 7 pm, May 9, City Hall.

Despite decades of paranoiacs worrying about cell phones, there is absolutely no evidence that "exposure" at the low intensities created by these devices has any meaningful effect on humans, for good or ill.

For comparison, you probably catch a stronger "dose" of radiation in the 2.4 GHz spectrum from leakage from your microwave oven, than you do from cell phones or the towers talking to them. In fact I regularly have problems with my bluetooth headset not working right if I'm standing in the kitchen when the microwave is on, because the microwave uses the same spectrum, and just the leakage that gets past its insulation is strong enough to drown out the transmission from the phone to the headset.

It's possible you're walking around some *infinitessimal* amount warmer because the water in your body is absorbing some of those radio waves. But we'd be talking about something like a millionth of a millionth of a degree. If you're concerned about harm from this stuff, maybe you should instead try worrying about, say, wearing sunscreen and sunglasses, to protect your skin and eyes against *actually* harmful frequencies in the UV range. Or about carbon emissions causing long-term climate change. Or any of the other countless real problems we have.

All these comments about safety and EMF's, apparatus already installed in SM, 5G not even being around for years, property values, etc. should be taken very seriously. I have family members who worked in EMF laden environments and have cancer and other impairments. We must fight this poisonous invasion in our neighborhoods. I will be attending the meeting at City Hall, 5/9.

Protect your Property Values
ATTEND CITY OF SAN MATEO MEETING
May 9th - 7 PM - City Hall

Citizens and cities have a right to protest these installations. The cell companies have to show a need for coverage. Verizon has 100 % 4G coverage in San Mateo. Why is the city not challenging their application ? They do not need coverage, they only want to license our light poles and power poles to upgrade their product in the future. 5 G devices do not even exist and will not exist for years ! There has been zero safety testing of the small cell units that they want to deploy throughout our residential neighborhoods. San Mateo needs to challenge Verizon to show a true need for coverage. I will be at the meeting at City Hall, Wed 7 pm.

The fact that Burlingame has been attentive to this very issue since 2011 and has had an ordinance in place for nearly seven years to protect its residential neighborhoods and tax paying citizens is admirable. Meanwhile, San Mateo neighborhoods are already falling victim to these wireless facilities near our homes. These locations already exist: Maple/Castillian, Palm near 9th, Carmel Circle by Mission, Sonora/Alameda - just feet from Aragon High and Baywood Elementary classrooms. There are 24 new locations proposed. Whose address is next? Whatever the identifier (cell tower, wireless facility, or small cell), telecom proliferation is on its way to a pole near you. Consider your property value. Our elected officials are listening. Attend the meeting 5/9 at 7PM at San Mateo City Hall if you don’t want San Mateo to be the cell tower farm of the Peninsula.

7 pm San Mateo City Hall Wed May 9, 330 W. 20th Ave
Say What ?! The plans are to put these untested devices every 150 - 500 ft around town ! With almost no public comment ? Outrageous ! When these go up, property values go down 20 - 25 %. Santa Rosa just had them installed - SO ugly ! Unknown health effects for our kids and pets. BE THERE Demand answers. Public comment needed ! 7 pm San Mateo City Hall Wed May 9, 330 W. 20th Ave

The fact that Burlingame has had ordinances in place for nearly seven years to protect its residential neighborhoods and tax paying citzens from telecom infiltration is admirable. Meanwhile, San Mateo quietly approves locations for its residents’ front yards. Evidence of this already exists. Take a look at these locations already installed near our homes: Castilian/Maple, Palm near 9th, Carmel Circle, Sonora/Alameda just between Baywood and Aragon Schools to name a few. There are 24 new proposed locations. If you don’t want your address to be next, attend the meeting at city hall 5/9 at 7PM. If residents don’t speak up, wireless facility proliferation is on its way, and San Mateo will be the cell tower farm of the Peninsula.
