I am currently a junior at Lynbrook High School in San Jose. Reading Collin Binkley’s article “We’re going to keep fighting” in the March 15 edition of the Daily Journal about the nationwide student-led school walkouts helped me realize exactly what a pivotal moment I am living in and made me want to do more.
When I heard about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, my first thought was that it was just another shooting. After every school shooting, news stations capture headlines, and words of condolences pour in to the communities affected. Every time, lawmakers fail to address the real issues at hand, and they fail to create real solutions that would prevent so much suffering from occurring again.
But the Stoneman Douglas shooting is different. In its aftermath, students are using their voices to protest that and demand immediate action. Enough is enough.
At 10 a.m. March 14, I walked out of my second period class. I listened to and was inspired by fellow students speaking out about the issues we are fighting for, observed 17 seconds of silence for the 17 Parkland victims, and sang in unity with fellow classmates. This gave me hope. I believe that our movement can make a real change that is necessary for students to be able to go to school without worrying if it will be their last day.
