Regarding the article “Huge development in works” (in the Feb. 9 edition of Daily Journal), it appears that not only does this development use the term Transit Corridor as a cliche to get their buildings passed and built, there are many others using the same “smoke screen” to fool the public to gain sympathy. San Mateo County does not need any more construction, whether it be for housing or office space.
This is all pure greed by the cities as well as contractors. Everyone is falling prey on the residents of the surrounding cities in San Mateo County. Let’s face it, where the heck is all the water going to come from? We just exited a water shortage and still are not completely free of it occurring again. What about all the traffic congestion? The majority of the occupants whether they be residents or workers, will not be using public transit, no matter what may be desired.
South San Francisco is proposing another monster of a complex on El Camino Real at Westborough Boulevard (where a car wash exists). Again the “catch phrase” is Transit Corridor. This site will not have enough parking to accommodate all the condominiums or apartments because realistically everyone has two vehicles, even those with a studio. Again, where is the water going to come from? I believe that all future construction stop and that more reservoirs be built. The new Bay Area motto should be: “Let’s stop the greed and attend to the need.”
Emil: Your letter to the editor is full of misinformation. Farmers use most of the water in California, and owners of single family detached houses use far more water than do occupants of apartments, condos, and townhouses. Also, building housing close to public transpiration and employment reduces traffic. Bay Area freeways are jammed with people driving long distances to work because there isn't enough housing close to where the jobs are. TOD allows many people to take BART, Caltrain, and other forms of transportation, walk, bicycle, and even if they have to drive to work they won't be on the road as long as they are now.
Tom has already debunked most of the claims in your piece, Emil, but I'd also like to bring up this false notion that SMC doesn't need any more housing. The County added 72k jobs and only a measly 3.8k units of housing over the past 5 years. That's unacceptable, and the balance between the two needs to be restored.
