I, for one, do not believe criminal statutes should be written by initiative propositions.Â
Estimates by the legislative analyst and director of finance of the fiscal impact on state and local governments: the increased state criminal justice system costs would potentially be in the hundreds of millions of dollars annually, primarily due to an increase in the state prison population.Â
We need to address the drug problem head on, but Proposition 36 is not the remedy. The Board of Supervisors should not endorse this measure.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Smith, but if you’re not for this measure, what do you propose? Doing nothing for the past 10 years has led us to this point, and it’s obviously good. Are you for extending the status quo? And for how long? Until you or your family or your friends are victimized? Repeatedly by the same perpetrators?
