A reporter suggests (Oct. 14 headline) that Proposition 50 may not pass in California. The writer’s logic is that voters may think twice about pausing the hard-won independent redistricting commission (who are primarily Democrats anyway) just to stick it to Trump, as all our elected Democrats compel us.
Well, most of us really want to stick it to Trump, and Proposition 50 gives us the perfect excuse to set aside our ethics (proportional representation in Congress) because we’re angry, and angry is cool. I predict it will win easily.
Of course, 6.1 million California votes were cast Republican last November and 9.3 million Democrat, about 2:3 ratio. But of California’s 52 representatives in Congress, 43 are Democrats and nine are Republican. That hard blue tilt works in my neighborhood, but not so much for our Republican brothers inland. And that is why we did an independent commission to begin with. We were, and remain, fully slanted by past gerrymandering by our own team.
I hate to have to say, maybe before we set up to kick five of the nine Republicans out of our state team of 52, we should look in the mirror. We can (and generally do) show our resistance to Trump in more honorable ways. Our governor’s passionately excused ethics holiday seems cool, but it isn’t.

Campaign spending exceeds $90 million (Democrats outspending Republicans 3:1), with endorsements split: Yes from Gov. Newsom, Planned Parenthood, and teachers' unions; No from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jessica Millan Patterson (CA GOP chair), and the League of Women Voters (neutral but initially opposed).
