Editor,
As a frequent reader of alternate history fiction, I enjoyed Jon Mays’ piece linking Obama’s choice to improve health care coverage to Trump’s current dictatorial approach to immigration.
Alternate histories are creatures from what the author chooses to start. In Mays’ case, he didn’t include precedents at least as important as Obama’s choice.
Pursuing free trade without dedicating enough of the wealth it generated to regions whose economies needed to be redeveloped. The rise of religious fundamentalism. Electing a Black president in a pervasively racist country. Financial deregulation and poor oversight causing the 2008 global financial collapse. The GOP’s unwillingness to support enough recovery stimulus to compensate for that collapse. And a widely held belief women just don’t have what it takes to be president. Which is bizarre given the role moms play in the economy, not to mention in bringing up the next generation.
While I’m sure Obama’s choice played a part in creating the present — every public policy choice does — tying responsibility mostly to that particular action is likely a bridge too far.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Olbert, but a major misconception (likely on purpose) undermines your premise. You say folks have a “widely held belief women just don’t have what it takes to be president.” The issue is not that it relates to women, it’s because the two women that have been offered by Democrats are nowhere near qualified and “just don’t have what it takes to be president.” Voters have spoken, wisely. Bigly. Meanwhile, it seems to me that the immigration issue was solved by what our (yes, our) President Trump stated was the solution - we just needed a new President. Voila. Immigration issue being solved each and every day.
