It shouldn’t take a ballot measure to ensure basic oversight of law enforcement in San Mateo County. Yet, here we are — which is why Measure A is on the ballot.

For too long, our county has lacked independent civilian oversight of the Sheriff’s Office. Across the country, communities have recognized that real accountability strengthens public safety and builds trust. Measure A isn’t about punishing law enforcement — it’s about protecting both the community and the officers who serve it. Independent oversight fosters transparency, ensures fair investigations, and improves communication. When people trust law enforcement, cooperation increases, making everyone safer.

The Board of Supervisors has taken the first step by exploring oversight. Now, it’s time to act. No matter where you stand, Measure A is a defining moment for accountability in San Mateo County. Every voter should take the time to understand what’s at stake and make their voice heard.
