Liberals like to wear their tolerance on their sleeves like a badge of honor (“Wursthall banning ‘Make America Great Again’ hats” in the Feb. 1 edition of the Daily Journal). What they are really tolerant of is those who hold the same exact opinions. In a country as diverse as America, there are bound to be some who hold views that others find unpopular, upsetting, and even offensive. I was offended when the Nazis marched through Skokie, Illinois, wearing Swastikas in 1977. The ACLU vigorously defended them.
I don’t happen to share most of the views of Donald Trump’s supporters. But I believe they have the right to express their opinions even if it offends some people. Liberals can’t advocate for their right to push their beliefs while denying that same right to conservatives. Wursthall’s policy of refusing service to anyone wearing a MAGA hat is just as bigoted as the “back of the bus” and housing discrimination suffered by blacks. And it is just as unfair as the quotas that at one time limited the number of Jews in higher education. J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, the owner of Wursthall should be ashamed of himself.
Great points Robert and you are 100% right, but I want to give this owner-chef an out. As a Trump supporter, I think this could be a teachable moment. Instead of going to our corners we could actually come together. The owner of the restaurant could invite those offended for a free bratwurst and beer in the traditional German Beer Hall fashion. Nothing brings people together like gourmet hot dogs and beer. Great location to have a great discussion with each other. Full disclosure, I have no German ancestry in me, I just enjoy the great beer halls in Munich whenever I visit Bavaria. Talking about a place that can bring people together.
Neither can conservatives. There is enough finger pointing to go around. The ACLU is not a political entitie. American Civil Liberties Union fights for every citizen's rights. Republucan, Democrat, Independent, Green Party, Nazi et al. The Zealots on both sides care more about party than country. Which you can witness in some responses. Until both start working for the common good for all I believe this problem will continue.
