Editor,
I have two comments concerning Carla King's letter "Selling your soul" published June 27.
1) Never underestimate the power of the solitary voice seeking to bring the truth to an uniformed public. Letters to the Editor, like posts to blogs, are excellent tools in seeking justice, and they work. It was the bloggers who kept the Downing Street Memos in the limelight and put pressure on the mainstream media by linking to the original May 1 news article in the London Times.
2) Manipulating events and information in order to deceive the public in our attempts to provoke war is not new. FDR's administration not only knew of the attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbour (killing about 2,460) in advance and did not prevent it, they actually provoked it. Lt. Arthur McCollum, head of the Far East desk for U.S. Navy intelligence, wrote a detailed eight-step plan on Oct. 7, 1940 that was designed to provoke an attack. FDR immediately set the covert plan in motion. Secretary of War Henry Stimson wrote: "The question was: how we should maneuver them (the Japanese) into the position of firing the first shot."
I am guessing Carla King's comment, "You have sold your soul for stuff" was in reference to the mainstream media in general and not to the Daily Journal in particular. The Daily Journal, after all, published her letter as it has previously published others of its kind.
