We’ve been disheartened to hear the dialogue in the opinion section over the past few issues over San Mateo Councilmember Rob Newsom. We’ve lived in his district for almost 15 years, and he has been responsive to us every time we have reached out, especially on issues of noise at Laurie Meadows Park (we share a fence line with the park).
Like other members of the council, Mr. Newsom works full time and has a family. Being a councilmember is a part-time position that pays approximately $1,200 a month. All of this to say, we appreciate his service and support him in his bid for reelection.
If residents expect responses like they receive from other levels of government, then they need to understand that those politicians have full-time positions with staff included. If we have those expectations then we should petition to make our council full time with staff.
