The hands-free cellphone law, the put on your lights if your wipers are on law, the prohibition of texting while driving law, data breach, identity theft and privacy laws, cruise ship pollution laws, pharmaceutical waste disposal laws, tire recycling laws, sharps recycling laws, CEQA reform and streamlining laws, elder abuse mandatory reporting laws, school funding equalization laws, health care access laws, renewable energy laws.
The creation of a pilot program for child care subsidies in San Mateo County. Requiring a bittering agent in antifreeze to protect animals, forcing bankrupt companies to honor gift certificates, and creating transitional kindergarten.
These are just some of the few actions that Joe Simitian has created in his legislative career. Every single one of us has been affected and had our lives made better because at least one of these laws.
None of them are particularly flashy, but neither is Joe. Joe is a no-nonsense hard worker who gets the job done. He is thoughtful and articulate. He can explain difficult and challenging topics because he knows them well, and can modify accordingly. His philosophy is wrapped in the concept of making people’s lives better and every single piece of legislation he has authored over a several decade career as state lawmaker and local representative reflects that.
He is the first to come up with the “There oughta be a law” concept in which he asks constituents to come up with legislative ideas. He understands little ways to make life better, but always digs deep to find ways to tackle the big issues. His answers on immigration and the Middle East were the most thoughtful, knowledgeable, insightful and thorough. His emphasis on both promoting and constraining tech provided the most depth and practicality. And his honest assessment of how best to serve us in Congress was refreshing and real.

When Joe was in the state Assembly and Senate, he could have focused on his home base of Palo Alto, however, he chose to understand the needs of this county and carried several pieces of important legislation that served us well.
The 16th District in Congress dips into San Jose, but is also in Palo Alto and the San Mateo County coast. In the race to replace U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo in that seat, Joe is a natural choice. He is familiar with us, he knows how to get things done, he does the things that have to be done, and he does his homework.
There are other qualified candidates for the position, former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Assemblymember Evan Low in particular, who would also do well if elected. However, our job is to provide you, our readers, with the best choice.
Without a doubt, hands-down, 110%, no question about it, the best candidate is Joe Simitian. Not only has he earned it, we deserve someone like him representing us in Congress.
