It’s hardly a secret that there is lately plenty of angst to go around today. Whether it’s a tariff war with China, a Russian invasion of Ukraine or a roller coaster U.S. stock market, there is plenty of cause for worry and uncertainty in these unsettled times.
We could all use a break from these challenges to our peace of mind. San Mateo County’s sheriff, Cristina Corpus, is no different — and she is under additional strain.
She is experiencing enormous pressure to vacate her office due to a scathing and extensive report detailing serious issues in her department and the electorate’s subsequent March vote to permit the county’s Board of Supervisors to fire her. Let’s be honest: Corpus needs some me-time right about now.
What better device to help with some necessary TLC than a pair of handy massage chairs right there within the embattled Sheriff’s Office? Sure, the price of these pieces of furniture is high ($13,340 for both) but how does one place a cost on a search for serenity?
Let the sheriff have a time-out. Let her kick back and receive some quiet relief from the controversy and turmoil that surround her and her office.
Oh, and while the taxpayers finance her office’s perks in the halls of government in Redwood City, maybe the rest of us could receive some solace in the form of a tax break or two. Or, we’d be willing to consider trading the cash for a massage chair.
SUSHI AND HAND LOTION: The public relations folks who are beating the drum for Jagalchi, the new Korean food outlet at the Serramonte Center can’t resist the temptation to try to falsely gild what they perceive to be a civic lily when it comes to geography.
They tout the sprawling food/dining complex as being “on San Francisco’s south end.” No, the huge market is not situated in or on Burlap by the Bay. It is a good mile or more away and firmly located in Daly City on the site once occupied by JC Penney, thank you very much.

Aside from that calculated oversight (anything to inspire visions of the Golden Gate Bridge and sea lions slumming at Fisherman’s Wharf, by the way), Jagalchi, with 75,000 square feet of space, is a massive and impressive investment that includes bars, a high-end restaurant, a bakery and even a glitzy Korean-centric beauty supply section.
The humungous place is like a Draeger’s/Sephora combo with a decidedly Asian twist. Parking is free and plentiful at the sprawling Serramonte complex. Brilliant.
Let’s just hope that tariffs on Asian goods (if they do become truly onerous for consumers) don’t derail the enthusiasm at the same time the new commercial outlet is trying to make a splash.
‘DOGS CHASE CARS’ ON AMAZON: Pat Sangimino, a standout sportswriter who hails originally from Pacifica, has penned a new book, “Dogs Chase Cars.” It’s a personal literary effort that takes on a subject near and dear to his heart: The steady collapse of the nationwide print newspaper business. Sangimino spent more than three decades working as a sports journalist in the Midwest before returning to the Peninsula not long ago. His book is available via Amazon at $19.19 in hardcover, $14.99 in paperback.
CARDINAL McELROY TO CONCLAVE: After the death of Pope Francis earlier this month, Cardinal Robert McElroy, the Archbishop of Washington, D.C., who spent much of his early years and eventual clerical career at parishes along the Peninsula, was scheduled to take part in the selection of a new leader of the Catholic faith. More than 100 cardinals from throughout the world have been meeting at the Vatican in Rome to prep for a historic conclave to choose the next pontiff.
MORE DOLLARS FOR INFORMATION: Reward money in the case of that Hillsborough police shooting incident keeps piling up. The total has reached a reported $150,000 (so far) for key information in the brazen February attack on a police officer in the Hillsborough department’s compound on Floribunda Avenue off El Camino Real. At the time, there were no security cameras in operation to record the assault on video and perhaps provide a reasonable look at the perpetrator.

Thanks for your column today, Mr. Horgan. Since the San Francisco 49ers play in Santa Clara and SFO is in San Mateo, I think it’s fine if a Korean food outlet wants to tout being on San Francisco’s south end. If I recall correctly, wasn’t Pope Francis a global warming propagandist? I wonder what Pope Francis would have thought of these more than 100 cardinals taking fossil fuel powered transportation to the Vatican in Rome. Maybe Catholics at or near the top of the chain aren’t allowed to use Zoom?
