California has allocated more than $20 billion to alleviate the state’s homelessness crisis since Gavin Newsom became governor in 2019, but there’s precious little data on how the money was spent and what effect it’s had, other than the number of unhoused people has continued to climb.

Despite the absence of hard information, Newsom has been highly critical of what he characterizes as the shortcomings of local governments and has threatened to withhold funds from those deemed to be laggards. Local officials, in turn, say they cannot construct comprehensive, long-term strategies unless Newsom is willing to make multiyear commitments of financial support.

Thanks for another great article, Mr. Walters. With no accountability, is it any wonder why the homeless industrial complex gets bigger and bigger, with negligible results? As I said in the past, I wouldn’t be surprised if folks working in the homeless industrial complex are able to buy more homes than the number of homeless they’ve housed.

Not So Common

Governor Newsom who made the homeless problem worse, now wants to blame the cities and counties who received funding without requiring accountability. This is typical of a democrat, always blaming others. Rather than stepping to the plate and saying, "I am a complete failure, I should have required monthly accountability for the funds provided to solve the homeless issue." Newsom decides to blame everyone else except himself, for liberals this makes Newsom a perfect candidate to run the USA.
