Frank James Regan, 79-year old husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at UCSF on January 14, 2026.
Frank was born in San Francisco on October 28, 1946 to the late Marie and Frank Regan and was part of a large extended Irish family in the City. He met his wife, Christine, at a PG&E holiday party in 1974 and they married ten months later following a whirlwind courtship. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary last August.
Frank was a devoted father and is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Regan and Kathryn McCarthy, as well as his son-in-law, JJ McCarthy. A tremendous source of joy and pride were his two wonderful grandchildren, Barrett James (age 14) and Mills Regan McCarthy (age 10). Frank’s favorite pastime was having his family around him or traveling together and they have memories too numerous to count.
Frank proudly earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of San Francisco at age 40 after years of night classes and weekend study. This milestone opened doors for him that he otherwise would never have contemplated.
Frank joined the National Guard in 1966 and became an Army medic where he served as a member of the reserves for over five years. In 1967, he joined PG&E in an entry-level position in the Mail Room. Over 38 years with the Company he advanced through many positions and was elected by the Board to the role of Vice President - Governmental Relations in June 1996. He had a great sense of humor and used it skillfully to lighten tense situations and work toward solutions. He was a great friend and colleague to many.
Frank and his family moved to the Peninsula in 1983 and cultivated many meaningful friendships. They had a full social life and a home in San Mateo Park bustling with activity. They hosted many holidays, parties and even one wedding in their backyard. He was so proud of the beautiful neighborhood where he and his family were lucky to live. Whenever he travelled, Frank always talked about how much he loved coming home.
Frank battled lymphoma valiantly over a nine-year period. He was determined with each recurrence to endure the treatment and resume a normal life. But, in 2025, the lymphoma returned with a vengeance, along with serious pulmonary and other medical issues that were too difficult to overcome. Our family wishes to acknowledge with much appreciation and respect Dr Karen Chee and Dr Wei Ai at UCSF. The doctors and their respective teams provided an extraordinary level of medical care to Frank until the end and his family will be forever grateful.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Should you wish to honor Frank with a donation, please consider: UCSF Foundation, Memo: Research of Dr Wei Ai, P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, Ca 94145.
