Donald Dornberger, born Nov. 26, 1926 in San Mateo, and preceded in death by parents Fred and Emily Dornberger and sister Lillian, died peacefully Dec. 24, 2008 at the age of 82.
He is survived by his dear cousin mary schmidt of Olympia, Wash.
He died just 15 minutes before Christmas of "MDS,” a rare blood and bone marrow disorder. At his side was lifelong friend, George MacKender of Oregon, and close friends Linda Alter and Adrian Servantes.
Don was a graduate of Burlingame High School, joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944; (second division Camp Pendleton, San Diego he served in the invasion of Okinawa and was proud to have served his country. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After retiring from Bethlehem Steel in 1977 he took life easy, was an avid golfer, became an amateur photographer and loved to play bingo.
Also a member of various fraternal organizations such as the Masons. Shriners, Scottish Rite Temple and Elks Lodge; Don always served with pride and integrity.
Very special thanks and gratitude go to his oncologist, Sandra Canales and the Kaiser Hospice Team in Redwood City who provided outstanding care and support.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at Peninsula Lodge located at 1150 Arroyo Ave. in San Carlos. Private scattering at sea will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society of Northern California.
