Bjorn E Olsen

Bjorn E Olsen passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018. He was born in Norway in 1933 and spent his early childhood growing up in a country occupied by the Nazis. This had a profound influence on his life regarding issues of fairness, equality and social justice. He left home at the age of 16 and went to sea working on various ships. He returned to Norway to complete his national service, start a family and earn his engineering degree. He spent the rest of his career as an officer working as First or Chief Engineer operating, trouble-shooting or repairing massive steam turbine engines on super tankers and cruise ships all over the world. He met his wife, Sally, on a cruise ship in 1980 and the two were married a few years later. They spent their 37 years together surrounding themselves with friends and family as well as traveling the world. Bjorn is survived by his wife Sally, his brother Sven, adult children Mona, Inge and Monica, stepsons Michael and Allen and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, niece and nephew. He was a gentle, kind man with a subtle sense of humor and a love of animals. He was a long time resident of San Mateo. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 11:00AM, The Congregational Church of San Mateo, 225 Tilton Drive, San Mateo. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
