Family man John Marty wasn’t opposed to getting into politics, he just hadn’t assumed it would be so soon.
The 42-year-old father of four just seemed to gravitate toward numbers at a young age. The interest stuck, and now his work in real estate, loans and mortgages is helping out San Bruno. Marty was named last month as the city’s new treasurer after recently elected Linda Freitas resigned.
Marty had actually applied to be on one of the city’s many commissions, he thought possibly planning. That’s when he got a call from Councilman Jim Ruane asking if he might be interested in the new opening. After talking it over with his wife Nancy, Marty decided to give it a go.
"When he gets on something, he really follows through. He dotes on his family. He’s a calm, cool and collected type of person. He doesn’t enter into anything rapidly,” said Gene Marty, his father. Marty grew up in San Francisco as the seventh of eight children. After high school, he attended college at the University of San Francisco where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in real estate and graduate degree in finance. He worked for years in banking before going into business with his father in 2003.
Now Marty and his father have two offices for their business, Investment Capitol Advisors, one in Burlingame and one in San Francisco. The Burlingame location focuses on investments while the San Francisco office is aimed at mortgage loans.
Although these endeavors are time consuming, Marty devotes the majority of his free time to family. Marty met his wife Nancy on a whim when they both got talked into being the extra players needed for a friend’s softball league in 1988.
"I was in left field. She was in left center. They joked about having to separate us because we talked too much,” he said.

Now the couple has four children, 11-year-old Danielle, 10-year-old Jennifer, 5-year-old Jack and 2-year-old Joey. The family moved to San Bruno in February 2001 when Jack came along and they realized a bigger house was in order.
These guys occupy the majority of Marty’s free time with sporting events to attend and sometimes coach. For the past three years he coached his daughter’s basketball team at St. Robert Elementary School. But his personal sports goal, outside of family and business of course, is to one day hit a hole in one. So far he’s come close a couple of times, but for now will need to keep on swinging.
Another unknown desire for the number man is the hope to write a book, a murder mystery, insider trader kind of story. But if that doesn’t happen, he wouldn’t mind taking a long road trip and hitting up every baseball park in a season to watch the games.
For now, however, Marty spends his days still becoming acquainted with his job for the city. He’s got help by his side and Freitas on speed dial.
