A Millbrae man was arrested Thursday after online threats and shots fired inside an apartment led to an investigation into the weapons and concerning behavior, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
On Wednesday, deputies received information about the man who was allegedly sending messages raising concerns about violence toward others and potential self harm. In the messages, he admitted to discharging a firearm in his apartment building on the 100 block of North Rollins Road and included a photo of a bullet hole in a wall.
The man, Anthony D. Roberts, 27, had previous contacts with law enforcement and multiple firearms registered in his name. Deputies gathered intelligence into the online threats through its partnership with the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center. An arrest warrant, a search warrant and a gun violence restraining order were all subsequently signed by judges. On Aug. 21, sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and agents with the San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force, carried out a plan to safely take Roberts into custody. Roberts agreed to meet deputies outside his apartment building, where he was taken into custody without incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
After Roberts was in custody, a search warrant was served and deputies located four guns and an assault rifle with characteristics classifying it as an illegal weapon. A large amount of ammunition, tactical gear including a bulletproof vest and pills containing suspected fentanyl were safely collected as evidence. Sheriff’s deputies also located recently patched holes in the walls of the apartment, consistent with the bullet holes seen in online messages, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
