A San Carlos man has pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco to evading taxes by falsely claiming more than $1 million in personal expenditures as business expenses.
Aleck Kogan pleaded guilty on Thursday in the court of U.S. District Judge Martin Jenkins to three counts of evading taxes for the years 1995, 1997 and 1998.
He will be sentenced by Jenkins on May 15. Each count carries a possible maximum penalty of five years in prison, but the actual sentence will be determined under federal sentencing guidelines.
Kogan owned a business called Professional Copy Service in Sunnyvale at the time of the tax evasion.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Jacobs said that Kogan admitted during his plea that he disguised his personal expenses by writing the names of business vendors on check stubs and recording the expenditures as company business expenses in the copy firm?s accounting journals.
The false information then appeared on the company?s financial statements and Kogan?s tax preparer relied on the statements in completing Kogan?s tax returns, Jacobs said.
