A Redwood City resident has been charged with arson of an inhabited dwelling after allegedly setting two mattresses on fire in an apartment complex, causing roughly $10,000 worth of damage and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The man, 35-year-old Eliaser Hernandez, allegedly put paper and other flammable materials on the two mattresses and lit them on fire in his apartment at 1321 Marshall St. on the morning of Nov. 1.
According to a man staying with him in the apartment, Hernandez asked him for a lighter and he obliged, then used the lighter to start the fire despite his protests, Wagstaffe said. Other residents of the apartment complex had noticed Hernandez’s deteriorating mental state and propensity to start small fires, Wagstaffe said.
Hernandez was already on felony probation for a commercial burglary. He is now in custody, but refused to come to court Nov. 1, Wagstaffe said. A new court date has been set for Nov. 2.
