Investigators with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a sex crimes suspect who used social media to prey on teenage girls.
In July of 2024, deputies assigned to the Headquarters Patrol Bureau responded to a call for service involving a teenage girl who had been victimized. Using Automated License Plate Reader technology, social media and other investigative methods, detectives identified the suspect as William V. Coultrip, 19, of Pleasanton.
The investigation revealed Coultrip used social media applications such as Snapchat to engage in hundreds of inappropriate conversations with underage girls. Coultrip would often drive to the victims or request they take public transportation to meet him in person. Many of the conversations included the exchange of Child Sexual Abuse Material. Coultrip used multiple fake names including “John Kelly” and “Josh Foire,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
On Aug. 15, sheriff’s detectives coordinated with the Pleasanton Police Department to locate and arrest Coultrip on a San Mateo County arrest warrant. Investigators believe there are additional unidentified victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Those who recognize Coultrip and have further information are asked to contact Detective Nicole Pitts at npitts@smcgov.org or (650) 363-4060. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Anonymous Tip Line at (800) 547-2700.
