Southern California Edison recently turned down the opportunity to purchase surplus electricity at a bargain rate.
The offer by San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland would have taken effect later this month after the facility expands capacity at its on-site power plant. However, SoCal Edison refused.
Instead, the utility told hospital officials they must pay $24,000 a year for not using Edison power anymore.
"They said we are taking business away from them," said Bud Rogers, the hospital's plant manager. "We see it as a penalty."
Rogers said he thinks the hospital should be commended for its plan to satisfy its own heat and electricity needs, which in turn would inject much-needed juice into the state's grid.
The hospital offered to sell Edison 600 kilowatt hours -- enough to power 600 homes -- at a bargain rate of 3 cents per kilowatt hour.<
