Daly City police announced this week that all sworn officers will soon be carrying the drug naloxone, also known as Narcan, to prevent fatal opioid overdoses.
The San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury in June recommended that law enforcement officers in the county carry the drug, and the county Sheriff’s Office and San Bruno police are among the agencies that have since trained their personnel to do so.
Medical personnel are helping the Daly City department to train officers on recognizing the symptoms of an opioid overdose and administering the naloxone, police said.
In the coming weeks, all sworn officers will then carry naloxone to assist the public or first responders who can be accidentally exposed to dangerous opioids like fentanyl through skin contact or inhalation of airborne particles, according to police.
