A small "dark and dank" library in northern Burlingame is getting a massive renovation with the help of some book spines.
To fund a renovation for the beloved Easton branch library, the Burlingame Library Foundation is selling decorative book spines that will be mounted at the entrance of the new children's area. Donors can have their name or the name of a friend or loved one painted on the spine for a donation of $250.
The renovation project was undertaken when building inspectors found termites and dry rot eating away at the walls of the building. In fact, three of the four walls had to be re-built as a result.
"It had a certain charm, but it was getting old and tired," said City Librarian Alfred Escoffier.
The facility was originally built in 1927 and served as the home of the North Burlingame Women's Club. In 1946, the building was purchased by the city for a branch library.
The high ceilings, tall windows and fireplace in the 3,000-square-foot library are being retained, Escoffier said.
Since February, the facility has been undergoing seismic, structural, plumbing and technological upgrades.
With $900,000 already in its pocket, the foundation is looking to close the gap on the $1.1 million project.

So far, more than 50 major donors have contributed $1,000 each for the project. The foundation has also raised considerable money from privates trusts.
The newly unveiled library will have a strong children's section, Escoffier said. The book spine fund-raiser will be an ongoing way for the library to raise money for children's programs.
Popular books and media will also be available for adults, but Escoffier said the main library will still be the destination for those seeking a large library experience.
Before 1978, the library was open 45 hours a week; in recent years it has been open only 23 hours.
Once it re-opens, Escoffier said he hopes the library will expand its hours so more families can stop by for story time after work hours. Before it was closed for renovation in February, the library typically closed at 6 p.m.
The new library, to be unveiled in October, will have 10 computers.
Prospective donors may pick up a book spine donor form in the lobby of the main library or call the library offices at 558-7474 and request a copy.
