State Sen. Scott Wiener and Supervisor Connie Chan appear headed to a November runoff election to replace House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi in a Congress seat representing San Francisco.
Wiener, D-San Francisco, had 41.3% of the vote in the race for the District 11 seat and Chan, a Democrat representing the Richmond District and other neighborhoods on the western side of the city, had 28.6%, according to the latest results from the California Secretary of State’s website. Tech entrepreneur and former senior congressional aide Saikat Chakrabarti was in third place at 14.9%.
Pelosi announced last November that she would retire after serving in Congress for nearly 40 years and last month endorsed Chan in the race to succeed her. Pelosi first joined Congress in 1987 and was the first woman elected by her peers to be speaker of the House of Representatives, a role she served from 2007-11 and again from 2019-23.
Wiener served on the Board of Supervisors himself prior to being elected to the state Senate in 2016. He said in a statement about Tuesday’s results that they show “San Franciscans are ready for bold leadership, real results, and a new generation of leaders that isn’t afraid to take on the toughest fights facing our country.”
