A man died after trying to rescue his dog from the surf at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.
Bystanders noticed the middle-aged man going into the water about 2:08 p.m. to go after his dog along the beach near Lawton Street, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
While in the surf he collapsed for unknown reasons, and two women pulled him from the water and called 911.
National Park Service responders arrived within two minutes and gave him CPR, and San Francisco firefighters arrived soon after that to provide additional aid and take him to the hospital, officials said.
The man, whose name was not released, died despite life-saving measures. The dog came out of the water on its own and survived, fire officials said.
