Scientists confirmed that the injuries sustained from the entanglement were the cause of death. The team also found two lacerations on the animal’s right side with multiple fractures to the skull, consistent with a ship propeller.

The necropsy team also concluded that the injuries sustained to the fin whale were consistent with the dead whale that was reported to NOAA Wednesday, May 16, draped across the bow of a large ship entering the San Francisco Bay.

Two whales that washed up in the Bay Area last week died to due to human-related causes, Marine Mammal Center officials said.
