During the merry month of May, the build up from this season's best and worse shows is coming to a climatic and occasionally pathetic end. Not only will Dr. Carter be leaving the ER or is Everybody Loves Raymond airing its series finale. That, my friends, is only the beginning. May is going to be a very busy month so I hope you have cleared your schedules, got the babysitters, put the dog outside and popped the corn as we say goodbye and sit in anticipation for some of our favorites to return next fall.
Lost (ABC, May 18 and May 25) In the first season finale, which will run for a total of three hours, the mysteries of the island will be wrapped up and make room for a whole new set of clues. The survivors of Flight 815, will be thrown into heavy flashbacks and once again faced with the monster from earlier episodes. Show creators promise a cliffhanger that dares a loyal audience not to return in the fall for answers.
The Apprentice (NBC, May 19) It's getting to the time to hear those two little words from The Hair -no, not comb over - "You're Hired." Yes, with a raise of the hand and a flick of the wrist, Donald Trump will employ either a high school or college grad (this season teams were divided by diploma type) as his latest Apprentice. As the third edition to the Trump team is selected, viewers anticipate if a woman will make it into one of Trump's golden palaces.
ER (NBC, May 19) Noah Wyle, aka Dr. John Carter, is hanging up his stethoscope after 11 seasons. As the last original cast member, Carter is passing the paddles to Dr. Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) who joined the cast a few seasons ago as Carter's resident in training. Pratt has become a central part of the cast, making Carter's departure bittersweet. After love and loss, addiction and near death, and a rescuing bedside manner, Dr. John Carter will be missed, well remembered and more importantly, back next season for guest appearances. Phew.
Desperate Housewives (ABC, May 22) As promised by the rumor mill, one major character will die, the mystery of the Mary Alice death will be "answered," and Carlos finally learns of Gabrielle's affair with the lawn boy. Quite a bit of public drama for one Wisteria Lane.
24 (Fox, May 23) Jack Bauer can finally stop sweating on May 23rd - the fourth day of 24 is coming to an end (Each season of the show takes place over a 24-hour period). Take a nap, shower up and get some rest, JB. The two-hour season finale will leave us waiting to find out if President Palmer will be back in the White House next season, will Michelle and Tony rekindle their romance amidst a disastrous background, will Jack attempt to save the country from a nuclear war be foiled? The clock is ticking.
American Idol (Fox, May 24 and of course, May 25) In the fourth, two night season finale, the last two contestants of American Idol will sing their way to the finish line- all in an effort to be forgotten along with the winners and runner ups from seasons 2 and 3. There is only one Kelly Clarkson.
House (NBC, May 24) In other hospital news, a Guilty Pleasures fave will come to an end with, you guessed it, another diagnostic mystery. House's personal and professional life will collide in the exam room as Sela Ward (Sisters, Once and Again) guest stars as Dr. House's former love. Did I say former? Her husband is the medical mystery creating a critical disturbance in the conscience of the incorrigible doctor. In the May 17 episode, Carmen Electra will also guest star. There's a patient I would imagine House will have no trouble, uh, examining.
