The San Mateo County Office of Education is granting retroactive high school diplomas to veterans and Japanese Americans who were unable to receive their diplomas due to war.
Applicants may include veterans who served in the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, or Japanese American students affected by wartime incarceration and displacement during World War II.
All recipients must have been enrolled in a high school prior to enlistment in military service or incarceration in a WWII incarceration camp.
Family may also apply for a recognition diploma on behalf of an eligible person who is deceased.
Crocker Middle School in the Hillsborough City Elementary School District; Summit Public School: Shasta, a charter school in the Jefferson Union High School District; Corte Madera in the Portola Valley Elementary School District; Central and Tierra Linda middle schools in the San Carlos School District; and El Camino High School in the South San Francisco Unified School District were named a 2026 California Distinguished School by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.
The program recognized a total of 408 middle school and high school exemplary instructional programs throughout the state.

The San Bruno Community Foundation approved long-term funding for fifth graders in the San Bruno Park School District to attend the San Mateo County Office of Education’s outdoor education program. The foundation’s board awarded $160,000 grant to support the program for the current and next school years, and designated $2 million as a “quasi-endowment” specifically for the outdoor education program.

Each year about 200 fifth graders in the district and their teachers participate in the program.
