NEW YORK (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel is set to return to late-night television after a nearly weeklong suspension. The suspension triggered a national discussion about freedom of speech and President Donald Trump’s ability to police the words of journalists, commentators and even comics. Two groups of ABC affiliates that denounced Kimmel last week said they would not carry his return on Tuesday. The two corporations collectively control about a quarter of ABC affiliates. ABC suspended Kimmel’s show following criticism of his comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The network announced Monday that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would return after “thoughtful conversations” with the host.
Defense tells judge Sean 'Diddy' Combs has served enough time behind bars
NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs are urging a judge to sentence him early next month to no more than 14 months in prison for his conviction on two prostitution-related charges. The lawyers made their arguments Monday in a written submission to New York federal Judge Arun Subramanian. He's already rejected bail for Combs, signaling that he believes he must serve more time behind bars despite being exonerated in July of the more serious racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges. Prosecutors, who will submit their recommendations prior to the Oct. 3 sentencing, have already said they'll urge Combs stay imprisoned substantially longer than the four to five years they originally thought.

LONDON (AP) — Booker Prize-winning Indian author Kiran Desai is a favorite to win the prestigious fiction award again. Her novel, “The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny,” is among six finalists, including three American authors, announced Tuesday. This is Desai’s first novel since her 2006 Booker-winning “The Inheritance of Loss.” The judging panel includes Irish writer Roddy Doyle and actor Sarah Jessica Parker. Other finalists are Andrew Miller, David Szalay, Susan Choi, Katie Kitamura and Ben Markovits. The Booker Prize, founded in 1969, is known for transforming writers’ careers. The winner of the $68,000 prize will be announced in London on November 10.

But, at his core, the Mexican-born horror buff is a collector. Heritage Auctions announced Thursday that a fraction of del Toro's sprawling collection will be up for grabs. Del Toro told The Associated Press he felt inclined to give away some items after the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year came dangerously close to the so-called Bleak Houses, where he stores the collection. Online bidding began Thursday and the auction will take place on Sept. 26. A second and third part of the auction series will come next year.

Tiger fatally mauls handler during big cat show in Oklahoma, sheriff says
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Officials say a large tiger fatally attacked an animal handler as horrified onlookers watched during the end of a big cat show at a preserve in southeastern Oklahoma. Choctaw County Sheriff Terry Park says 37-year-old Ryan Easley was killed in the attack Saturday at the Growler Pines Tiger Preserve near Hugo. Park says the tiger unexpectedly started to bite and then shake Easley while the two were inside of a large cage. Park says Easley’s wife and young daughter were present when the attack occurred. Messages left Monday with Growler Pines Tiger Preserve were not immediately returned.
