GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Scottish club Rangers hired former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as its coach on Monday on a 2 1/2-year contract as the replacement for Russell Martin.
Following Martin's departure on Oct. 5, Rangers held talks with Steven Gerrard — its former title-winning manager — and Kevin Muscat, one of its former players.
Now the Glasgow club has turned to Rohl, a 36-year-old German who coached Sheffield Wednesday in England's second-tier Championship for nearly two years before leaving in July. He previously had coaching roles with Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and Germany's national team.
His first game in charge will be on Thursday in a Europa League meeting with Brann in Norway.
“It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club, recognized around the world," Rohl said.
Rangers is languishing in sixth place in the Scottish league, on just nine points from eight games and 13 points behind first-place Hearts.
“I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions," Rohl said, "and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club. ... The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now - my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this."
