The College of Notre Dame travelled to the Central Valley for the CSU Stanislaus "Best of the West" Invitational last weekend and realized they had some growing pains to work through.
The Argonauts were without their number one starting pitcher, Mary Brennan, and lost four games on Saturday and Sunday. Pitcher Judie Flanery received the loss in the opener, 17-0 to Humboldt State, and also received the loss in the fourth game 5-2 against Domingo Hills. Juana Hernandez, normally a shortstop, lost a game each day, 8-0 to Domingo Hills on Friday and 17-0 to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday.
The tournament features top NCAA Division II and NAIA Division I schools. CND belongs to the California Pacific Athletic Conference (CalPAC) of the NAIA.
Head Coach Bob Ginsberg stated that both pitchers were playing through injuries, and added that freshman mistakes played a factor in the games. Despite the poor performances, Ginsberg remains optimistic about his club's chances this year.
"This team is sticking together and playing with unity," said Ginsberg. "Were doing the best we can, but against this competition our best isn't good enough right now."
The Argonauts played Sunday in the loser's bracket in a single-elimination format. <
