Not even an extra hour of sunlight was enough for the Carlmont and Terra Nova baseball teams to finish their non-league game in Pacifica Tuesday.
The newly installed lights on the newly remodeled Terra Nova baseball complex were at full force when the Tigers scratched out a run on an infield hit in the bottom of the 12th inning to beat the Scots 5-4.
“We started at 4 (p.m.) and went to 7:20, 7:15?” said Terra Nova manager Jared Milch. “With our new lights, we could have kept going if we needed to.”
The game went back and forth, with Carlmont (2-6) scoring the tying run in the top of the sixth inning. After coming up short in the bottom of the ninth — when the Tigers loaded the bases with one out but couldn’t cash in as a runner was thrown out at the plate on a wild pitch to end the inning — Terra Nova (4-2) finally broke through in the bottom of the 12th.
Robby Derby led off the inning with a bunt single up the third-base line. With one out, Brody Finale singled through the hole between first and second to put runners on first and second and bring up No. 3 hitter, Joey Donati.
Donati was looking to make amends after he came on to pitch in the fifth, coughing up a three-run Terra Nova lead. Donati hit a shot into the hole at shortstop, where the Calmont defender had to make slide to knock the ball down.
It trickled away and behind him and Milch, coaching at third, waved home Derby for the win.
“Lot of relief and excitement,” Milch said.
That made a winner of Jesse Martinez, who pitched the final four innings of scoreless, hitless relief for Terra Nova. Giovanni DeFilippis, senior, made his first varsity start, and worked four scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
Martinez had a two-run single during a three-run, first-inning uprising for the Tigers, but Carlmont tied it against Donati, before Aiden James came in to limit the damage. He went the next four innings, giving up two hits. But the Scots managed to scratch out the game-tying run in the top of the sixth on a delayed double-steal.
Martinez then shut down the Scots in extra innings, giving up just two hits.
“Martinez was lights out. They got two hits, but he didn’t walk anyone. Once Martinez got in, [Carlmont] didn’t really threaten all,” Milch said. “I think our team showed a lot of grit. After we jumped out (to an early lead), they punched back. We punched back.
“Any time you can beat a team in the league above you (Carlmont plays in the Bay, Terra Nova in the Ocean) ... it’s exciting for our program.”
