Serra left fielder Nate Hui crashes into the bullpen shed in foul territory attempting to catch a foul fly in the Padres’ 4-0 loss to St. Francis Tuesday at Frisella Stadium.
Serra’s 10-game winning streak came to an end in a battle between two of the WCAL’s best.
Landon Kim
After going undefeated for the first month of the baseball season, the Padres ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday in a 4-0 loss to St. Francis-Mountain View at Frisella Stadium. Lancers starting pitcher Landon Kim worked 6 2/3 shutout innings before departing with one on and two out in the seventh. Junior reliever Brody Larocque entered to throw just two pitches to close it out.
Serra is currently ranked No. 1 in the Central Coast Section, according to MaxPreps.com. St. Francis (3-0 WCAL, 9-2 overall) is ranked No. 2. The two teams meet again Friday evening in Mountain View. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Padres (2-1, 10-1) wasted scoring opportunities early on, stranding three runners in scoring position through the first two innings.
In the first, Ian Josephson and Davis Minton led off the inning with back-to-back singles on consecutive pitches. After No. 3 hitter Jack Armstrong bunted them over, Evan Bradshaw was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kim bounced back, though, striking out back-to-back batters to escape the jam and strand the bases full.
In the second, Aaron Minton drew a two-out walk and promptly stole second to put himself into scoring position for Josephson, Serra’s hottest hitter. But Kim again won the battle, inducing a lazy fly ball to center to retire the side.
Serra starting pitcher Kelley Crawford was throwing hard, but couldn’t harness his fastball. The junior right-hander worked two-plus innings, allowing two runs on one hit while walking four and striking out one.

The Lancers got on the board with a 2-spot in the third. Henry Dommer and Bobby Hill drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. After Jack Keeper failed to bunt them over, the sophomore grounded a single into left field to load the bases. Sophomore Kyle McMillan then fouled off several pitches before working a walk to force home Dommer, and knock Crawford out of the game.
Aiden Waters came out of the pen to minimize the damage. The junior right-hander fired back with a strikeout of Gino Cappellazzo for the first out of the inning, then got a slow roller to second off the bat of Matteo Pignati — not hit hard enough for the Padres to turn two — with Hill scoring to make it 2-0.
Three Serra relievers, including two-thirds of an inning from junior Nate Hui, kept it 2-0 till the seventh, when the Lancers broke through for two more runs to take the game in hand.
The Padres breathed a sigh of relief Hui stayed in the game after a scary-looking play in the third. As Serra’s starting left fielder, Hui slammed into the shed in the foul territory down the left-field line in a brave attempt to track down a foul fly off the bat of freshman Siale Tulua. Hui was shaken up but stayed in the game, and Waters won the battle by retiring the side on the called third strike.
Waters worked three shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.
Senior right-hander Richie Calderon entered to start the sixth, and worked 1 1/3 innings. He was charged with two runs on one hit, and was replaced by Hui with two on and two out in the seventh. The Lancers eventually loaded the bases and plated a run on a walk to Pignati, and another when Tulua got hit by a pitch.
Kelley was charged with the first loss of his varsity career. His record falls to 2-1.
Kim’s record improves to 2-0 with a 0.74 ERA on the year.
