Aragon’s Maya Yoo splits a pair of Terra Nova defenders. Yoo gained 168 yards of total offense — 89 rushing and 79 receiving — as the Dons picked up their first win of the season, 6-0 over the Tigers.
Week 2 of girls’ flag football was a mixed bag as six teams — Aragon vs Terra Nova, Mills vs Hillsdale, and Sequoia vs Burlingame — descended on the Burlingame field as a part of a three-game jamboree.
Offenses for several teams took a step forward with another week of practice under their belts and it showed up in the games.
But points were hard to come by. In the three games, there was a combined six touchdowns scored across the the three games, with Burlingame and Sequoia combining for three touchdowns in the Panthers’ 15-6 win.
Aragon opened the day with a 12-0 win over Terra Nova in picking up its first victory of the season after being shut out in the opener. Mills got its second win in a row, holding off Hillsdale 6-0.
Defenses, however, had a big hand in keeping points off the board as they feasted on a bushel of interceptions throughout the day and early evening, as there were a total of 12 passes picked off.
“Seems like the schools are starting to figure things out,” said Mills head coach Erik Anderson, whose team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-0 win over Hillsdale.
“The more teams play, the more they’ll figure it out.”
Burlingame 15, Sequoia 6
The Panthers evened their record at 1-1 with the win over Ravens, despite Sequoia out-gaining Burlingame 258-171 on offense, almost all of which came through the air. Burlingame quarterback Miranda Sibley was one of three signal callers for the Panthers, and the most effective. She completed 6-of-12 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. She also ran for a score. Overall, the three Panther quarterbacks combined to go 9-for-21 for 143. Kaylee Ng was a favored target as she hauled in three passes for 70 yards. Giana Johnson made two receptions for 42 yards, including a touchdown.
Sequoia quarterback KyLeah Gil threw early and often. She completed 26-of-39 passes for 228 yards and a score that kept the Ravens in the game. Kieran Hennelly and Gisell Beltran each had seven catches for the Ravens. Hennelly finished with 68 receiving yards, while Beltran had 63 yards and the Ravens first touchdown in program history.
Both teams had chances early, but failed to convert. Burlingame looked to have scored on a big play on its first drive, but a 60-yard catch-and-run was called back because of a penalty.
On the ensuing possession, Sequoia marched from its own 20 to the Burlingame 10, with Gil connecting with Mia Nava for a 13-yard gain down to the 17.
Burlingame, however, turned back the threat when Natalie Wylie came up with an interception at the goal line.
Just before halftime, Burlingame got on the scoreboard. After forcing the Ravens to turn the ball over on downs at the Panthers’ 29-yard line, Burlingame needed just three plays to find the end zone. On first down, Sibley hooked up with Johnson for a 31-yard gain down to the Sequoia 20. A completion from Sibley to Ng took the ball to the 5 and Sibley did the rest, scrambling into the end zone from 5 yards out. A successful 2-point conversion gave Burlingame an 8-0 lead at halftime.
Burlingame extended its lead on the second drive of the second half, turning a Madeline Koo interception into a touchdown. Starting the drive at the Sequoia 24, the Panthers needed five plays to find pay dirt, with Johnson leaping up between defenders and pulling down an 11-yard touchdown for a 15-0 lead.
Sequoia answered with its first points of the season on its next drive, going 60 yards on six plays. Gil was a perfect 6-for-6 on the drive, culminating with a perfectly lofted ball over the defense and into the arms of Beltran, cutting the Panthers’ lead to 15-6.
Sequoia had its chances to score more as Grace Viscarra came up with an interception on Burlingame’s next possession. But the Ravens drive ended at the Burlingame 9 when they turned the ball over on downs.

Aragon used a three-quarterback system, but it was Kate Ramseyer who proved to be most effective. She completed her first eight passes as she finished 10-for-12 for 148 yards and a touchdown. All told, the three signal caller combined to go 18-for-23 for 242 as the Dons racked up 338 yards of offense.
Maya Yoo had a big day for the Dons, gaining 168 yards of total offense. She carried the ball nine times for 89 yards and added seven catches for 79 more. Nuria Lopez Adorno also caught seven balls, gaining 121 yards.
Terra Nova, on the other hand, managed just 24 yards of offense.
“Last week, definitely nerves settling in,” said Lopez Adorno, who also stars for the Aragon girls’ soccer team. “I think we could have had more points (against Terra Nova).”
The Dons missed out on a golden scoring opportunity, turning the ball over on downs at Tigers’ 10-yard line. But with a little over five minutes to play in the opening half, the Dons scored all the points they would need. Starting at their own 20, the Dons drove 60 yards on four plays, gaining more than half of that on first down as Ramseyer hit Lopez Adorno for 32 yards. Three plays later, Ramseyer rolled to her left and lofted a pass to Kaia Smith for a 12-yard touchdown and a 6-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Aragon twice had the ball inside the Terra Nova 20, but came up empty each time. An interception in the end zone ended one drive and late in the game, the Dons turned the ball over on downs at the Tigers’ 4-yard line.
Terra Nova still had time to do something, but that plan was thwarted when Aragon’s Amelia Ortiz picked off a pass with just over a minute to play to seal the win.
Mills 6, Hillsdale 0
The Vikings, after opening the season last week with a 26-12 win over San Mateo, struggled with the Knights, but did just enough to improve to 2-0.
Amaya Moore caught just about everything that came her for Mills — from both quarterbacks. A sophomore who also plays soccer, Moore finished with three catches for 90 yards and the game’s only touchdown. She also had two of the four Vikings’ interceptions.
“Great game,” Anderson said of Moore’s performance. “Phenomenal athlete.”
Mills managed 163 yards of offense, while Hillsdale struggled to just 47.
After an exchange of punts to start the game, Mills embarked on a long drive. Starting from their own 20, the Vikings drove to the Hillsdale 6-yard line, before Ren Delos Reyes stepped in front of a pass and picked the ball off in the end zone for the Knights.
Turnovers ruled the rest of the half as neither team could muster much offensively.
With just over five minutes left in the game, Mills finally found the end zone. An Ithzel Hernandez-Solis interception set up the Vikings in excellent field position at the Knights’ 31. Mills converted a fourth-and-3 to keep the drive alive, with Luna Mengel-Yoshimura finding Kalyssa Chu with a 9-yard gain. Three plays later, Lina Vaka found Moore with a 12-yard touchdown pass, with Moore spiking the ball emphatically.
The Vikings got the ball right back on Moore’s second interception of the game and the Mills offense then ran out the clock.
