The game of the year in community college football Saturday afternoon features two unbeatens: Diablo Valley College at state and nationally top-ranked College of San Mateo in the Bay 6 League opener.
The two 5-0 teams kickoff at 1 p.m. at College Heights Stadium.
The respected Massey Computer Ratings have CSM No. 1 and DVC No. 2 nationally among all 119, two-year college teams in the United States. San Mateo was ranked No. 1 in all state and national polls going into the Oct. 4 bye week. The Bulldogs have won 25 straight home games since 2022, including official 3C2A state titles in 2022 and 2024, taking mythical national crowns both seasons under head coach Tim Tulloch.Â
CSM is the unanimous No. 1 choice in the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll for the California Community College Football Coaches Association’s 66 teams. DVC is No. 4 – but second to CSM in Northern California, according to the coaches.
DVC is in its second year under head coach Jimmy Collins, who won a pair of state championships while previously at the helm of City College of San Francisco.
Diablo Valley has an outstanding quarterback in freshman Kalani McLeod, an all-state high school player last season at 3A state champion Vanden High School-Fairfield. McLeod led California high schools in 2024 with 4,494 passing yards and had 39 TDs. He currently boasts an incredible 204.2 collegiate efficiency rating for DVC, completing 77 percent of his passes for 1,394 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Jurrion Dickey, a five-star recruit out of East Palo Alto who spent an injury-filled senior season at Menlo-Atherton, has appeared in three games for the Vikings, with 11 catches and three touchdowns.
He originally signed with University of Oregon out of high school before bouncing back to DVC this year with a sophomore designation.
That means CSM’s state-leading defense will be severely tested. The Bulldogs are allowing only 199.2 yards of offense and 13 points per game. Defensive back RJ Whitten has three interceptions for CSM.
CSM has a strong offense, led by freshman quarterback Johnny Koett, who has completed 60 of 101 passes for 838 yards and seven TDs. San Mateo running back Malakhi DeMoss is averaging 100.7 yards over the three games he has been the Bulldogs top ball carrier. The sophomore had a breakout game of 183 yards in San Mateo’s final non-conference, 23-14, win at Fresno City College.Â
The well-balanced Bulldogs average 175.8 yards passing and 171.2 yards rushing.Â
San Mateo has returning all-state placekicker Dieter Kelly, who co-leads the state with eight field goals and is second in kick scoring with 41 points.
Saturday’s game will be livestreamed on baosn.tv.
