The high school golf season continued for a baker’s dozen athletes from San Mateo County schools as they advanced out of the two Central Coast Section qualifying rounds Tuesday and into next Tuesday’s championship round at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey.
A total of 42 golfers from 11 county schools — Aragon, Burlingame, Carlmont, Crystal, Design Tech, Menlo-Atherton, Menlo School, Nueva School, Sacred Heart Prep, San Mateo and Serra — played in one of two qualifying rounds May 5.
Scores do not carry over from the qualifying round to the championship round.
Only three county golfers qualified out of the morning group. Crystal’s Arden Xu was the leading local qualifier in the morning, earning 14th place with a round of 1-over 72. Burlingame’s Leo Jun was 15th with the same score. Xu’s teammate, Eric Cheung, was the final county qualifier in the morning, carding a 2-over 73.
Sacred Heart Prep’s Eduardo Tapper, who finished with 3-over 74, missed the cut by a stroke.
Stevenson, which has won the last three CCS team titles, dominated the morning round, taking the top four spots, led by Zachary Hawkins, who carded a 4-under 67, one of five golfers to post under-par rounds.
County golfers fared better in the afternoon round, with 10 advancing to next week’s championship. Serra’s Jacob Vierneza shot the lowest round of any San Mateo County golfers as he finished fifth with even-par 71. He will be joined by teammate Kyler Heath, who came in with a 3-over 74.
Nueva had a pair of golfers qualify, led by Morris Cheston, who carded a 1-over 72. Benjamin Ordody was one of a group of five golfers to shoot 5-over 76s and earn the final transfer spots.
That group included two Menlo-Atherton athletes. PAL individual champ Graham Martin and teammate Luke Carmel also carded 5-over 76s.
Christopher Tam will represent Design Tech in the championship round after a qualifying round of 3-over 74.
St. Ignatius’ Daniel Doan highlighted the second round and he posted the low round of the day with a 5-under 66.
Neuva’s Ryo Sprosts and Menlo’s Chase Edwards, both missed the afternoon cut by a stroke as they both carded 6-over 77s.

Six county teams still vying for CCS tennis crown
All four county teams that played first round matches — Aragon, Burlingame, Carlmont and Serra — joined top-seeded Menlo School and No. 6 Sacred Heart Prep in the second round of the Central Coast Section boys’ team tennis tournament.
All second round matches begin Friday at 4 p.m.
Aragon (16-6), the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division regular-season champion — got past Mountain View (13-6), 5-2 and will be in Cupertino to take on No. 5 Homestead (13-7) in the second round.
Homestead, like all the top-eight seeds, had a first round bye.
Burlingame (16-4), the PAL CCS play-in tournament champion, slipped past Leigh (12-4), 4-3. The Panthers won’t have to go far for their second-round match as they head to Atherton to face No. 6 SHP (14-8).
Carlmont (13-8) caught a bit of break drawing Pacific Grove (15-3) in the first round. The Breakers were set to host, but do not have tennis courts, so it was Pacific Grove that had to make the long trek up Highway 101 to Belmont.
And the Scots quickly dispatched the Breakers back to Monterey County after a 6-1 victory. Up next for the Scots draw defending CCS champ and top-seeded Menlo (21-0) in the second round Friday.
Serra (11-5), which finished third in the West Catholic Athletic League to earn its first CCS berth since getting the No. 6 seed in the 2014 tournament, beat Leland (10-5) 5-2. Like Burlingame and Carlmont, the Padres won’t have to go far for their second-round match as they face No. 7 Palo Alto (17-5).
