Wastewater collection and treatment is one of the most essential services provided in any community. No one wants sewer backups or overflows knowing that the consequences affect both public health and the environment.
Sewer system overflows during heavy rains result in untreated wastewater flowing onto city streets and into the Bay. The state requires that the city upgrade the wastewater treatment plant, construct an underground temporary storage facility, improve pump stations, replace pipes and repair areas where rain water or groundwater gets into the system.
To meet this infrastructure requirement, the City Council is considering restructuring of sewer fees to provide a reliable source of revenue to complete the $900 million Clean Water Program. The proposed rate restructuring includes a fixed monthly charge plus a usage charge adopted for five years. The revised rate structure and multi-year adoption is needed to qualify for attractive financing. San Mateo continues to have moderate sewer rates compared with surrounding communities.
The city will be hosting a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in the City Council Chambers to provide more detailed information. We encourage members of the public to attend and learn more about this important Public Works program.
We believe that taking these steps now is vital to protecting our community and ensuring future sustainability of this vital infrastructure.
Please join us in supporting this important city effort. For more information, please visit cleanwaterprogramsanmateo.org or call (650) 727-6870.
