Editor,

I am a cardiologist working here in San Mateo County. I see the harms of fossil fuel pollution on my patients. Climate driven wildfire smoke choked many us here in San Mateo County in 2020. During those wildfires a patient of mine suffered a heart attack as a direct result of the poor air quality and numerous other patients with a prior history of heart attacks or heart failure had increased office and hospital visits due to difficulty breathing. Most were also forced to remain indoors, missing out on much-needed exercise due to the poor air quality. Furthermore, as a father of two school-age children, I am concerned about the health effects of climate change on our children.

Samir, all you’re doing is transferring fossil fuel production to other states. I’m sure other states and other nations have no issues with that, as they’ll happily charge more for fossil fuels shipped to CA, increasing CA energy costs. Maybe we should focus on forest management and instead of spending money on people south of the border we should spend that money on forest management. Or maybe find some way to tame lightning, so those lightning strikes won’t ignite any forest fires. BTW, don’t forget to stop builders from pouring concrete for building foundations or driveways since concrete is a double-whammy – both carbon spewing and creating urban heat islands.

The smoke was caused by forest fires because the state forced PG&E to build unreliable green energy instead of managing the forest, upgrading transmission lines and clearing trees from them. The smoke has more to do with the need for "party change" than "climate changez'.

Perhaps we should ask the doctor what solutions he has in mind for tomorrow as he fills up his car at the gas station or plugs in his eVehicle. Platitudes don't solve a thing.
