I applaud the letter from Robert Nice, recognizing the courage of Fed Chair Jerome Powell “for standing up to Trump.”
However, he goes on the say, “it’s safe to say Mr. Powell is not a Republican.” On the contrary, what makes Powell’s stance all the more remarkable is the fact he is a lifelong Republican who was first nominated to be Fed chair by Trump during his first term, and received overwhelming support from Senate Republicans (confirmed by a vote of 84-13).
When his term ended in 2022, Powell was re-nominated by President Biden (over the objections of some Senate Democrats). Once again, Powell received bipartisan support in the Senate (this time, confirmed by a vote of 80-19). My, my, how times have changed.
