Editor,
One of the many encouraging stories to have come to light during this past season of peace appeared recently in the Daily Journal (“Keeping spirits bright during the holidays” in the Dec. 29 edition).
Reporter Anna Schuessler tells of how 15-year-old high school sophomore Matthew Mariani worked with his Boy Scout Troop 101 to fundraise and fill backpacks with non-perishable food, toiletries and warm clothing to be given over the holidays to local veterans in need. Close to $8,000 was raised and 168 backpacks were distributed. In addition, many personal notes of encouragement and support were included in the backpacks.
Thank you and congratulations to Scout Troop 101 and all the good people who worked with you. Your efforts speak volumes about the virtues of hope, compassion and respect and point the way to a truly happy and blessed new year.
