Was some of the Bush vote fed by a gut reaction to the media handling of the gay marriage issue? Most people probably can't articulate this feeling because they are unfamiliar with the workings of the news media. I was in news for 45 years and I'm not proud to admt it. No one should be subjected to seeing how a hot dog, law or news story is made.
Just how quickly - and from where - the words "gay" and "straight" were redefined and entered into our vocabulary is a story in itself.
The marriage issue had a big elephant. If marriage is to be more than the traditional arrangement - or if equality is the issue - what about other forms, say polygamy? Did any reporter ask about this? Hey, Gavin, can I marry this choir from Utah?
This was really a story about agenda setting. Bush should send a thank you card to Gavin Newsom and Michael Moore. And toss in the Daily Journal's Michelle Durand who compared his victory to a nuclear attack ("The day after ... and the day after that" in the Nov. 4 edition). With enemies like them, Bush doesn't need a lot of friends.
