Regarding the March 8 Daily Journal article, “County aiming to stem flight noise” article, the Greater East San Carlos Neighborhood Association seems to have adopted a mission to cripple operations at the San Carlos Airport. Certain east side residents, it seems, don’t want to have to deal with normal airport noise any longer.
One must consider that everyone who chose to move into San Carlos since the early 1900s has been aware that there is an airport in our city. If they don’t like aircraft noise, they have the option of residing somewhere else.
San Carlos also has a major train line. If the benefits of having train service are overshadowed by one’s dislike of train noise, then one should not choose to live nearby. So too is the case with freeway noise, or living next to one of our wonderful parks with sounds of children playing and parents supporting them.
My wife and I are 30+ year residents of the Laureola/GESC neighborhood. We happily accept the noises of flights overhead, trains on nearby tracks, freeways and kids in the park. There’s nothing wrong with exploring adjustments to flight operations that mitigate airport noises, but harsh restrictions could cripple or destroy the benefits of having a general aviation airport here.
Our airport was here long before all of us were. If you don’t like its presence, you should probably choose to live somewhere else where your sensitivities are less offended, rather than trying to suppress the necessary operations of an important public facility. Until the day when aircraft operation becomes completely silent, living near an airport is always going to involve acceptance of aircraft noise.
