Editor,

It was surprising to read that Millbrae City Council is going all in on diversity, equity and inclusion, while most institutions are scaling back or dismantling their programs (Oct. 3 edition of the San Mateo Daily Journal). The DEI industry mushroomed after the death of George Floyd, but has shrunk dramatically amid public backlash, financial unsustainability and looming lawsuits. Recent articles by NPR and the Atlantic, among others, explain the failures and demise.

Actually Tim, the dictionary defines the word equity as "the quality of being fair and impartial".

Not So Common

It's certainly not impartial if skin color, gender, lack of wealth etc... are given weight with respect to hiring. The only criteria should be, who is the best for any given job.

Mr. Donnelly - Good points. It would be beneficial for San Mateo City to "dismantle" DEI also.
