As children, my three siblings and I were always calling out when something “wasn’t fair.” Who got to choose the TV show that night, who got to sit in the front seat between our parents on road trips (and who was stuck in the back) and who had to follow a seemingly arbitrary rule from which an older sibling had been liberated.
Unlike families, which don’t always feel democratic, the government of the United States of America is intended to be a democracy — for the people, by the people. The recent gerrymandering in Texas, Missouri and soon-to-be other red states, cheered on by our current president, is definitively NOT FAIR and poses a dire threat to our democracy. California is fighting back with every legal tool available, even if under normal circumstances responding with our own redistricting wouldn’t feel “fair.”
We have to counterbalance the Republican assault on fair representation. Proposition 50, California’s “Election Rigging Response Act,” levels the playing field and ensures our voices aren’t silenced by Republican gerrymandering. It’s up to all of us to go out and vote on this critical referendum in the special election Nov. 4. We must say to the nation loud and clear that California cares deeply about restoring democracy. Your vote matters. We can’t sit back idly. Vote yes on Proposition 50.

Here we go again… Ms. Penn irrationally rationalizing the threat to democracy known as Proposition 50. I’m not surprised Missouri (I believe they’ve already set new districts) and other red states see Newsom’s attempt at cheating and are joining the redistricting war that Newsom started. Vote NO on the threat to democracy known as Proposition 50.
