Editor,

The reasons given by the Millbrae antihomeless shelter folks why they oppose the county’s plans are nothing but a smokescreen. The truth is very transparent and is basically a case of prejudice and fear of people in need. The county of San Mateo has a comprehensive and effective program for placing homeless people in housing. The city of Millbrae, however, has no such program, they offer only opposition. If we are going to solve homelessness everybody has to contribute, even if it makes us a little uncomfortable.

Thank you for your comments, Mr. Keegan. It is so discouraging to hear the terrible stigma placed on people that have been homeless, especially from people that serve in leadership positions.

No one is asking people to open their homes to strangers. We are asking that a hotel that is going out of business, on the busiest street in the county, with access to transit and services, become permanent homes for people that have experienced homelessness in the past. People that have fled domestic violence. Seniors that need a safe place to live.

Millbrae is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to block homeless housing. Now the city manager of Millbrae is trying to block the purchase of older apartment buildings anywhere in the county to be repurposed as affordable homes, because a building in Millbrae might be purchased for that purpose. What is so scary about the idea that people currently live in your community might be able to stay? If we can keep people housed, it will save millions of dollars. Does that not matter? Do they want more visible homelessness?

We have to do a better job of creating homes.

So, hlcsmc, why aren’t people that are supportive of sticking others with housing the homeless/seniors not offering to house the homeless/seniors in their own homes? Seems they’re all too willing to talk the talk but aren’t anywhere close to walking the walk. Perhaps if they did so, others may do the same. Perhaps we can allocate some of the $billions given to the homeless industrial complex and instead, use them to reimburse folks willing to house a few folks.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Keegan. But from this hullabaloo about housing the homeless, how many officials, leaders, and others advocating for a homeless shelter in Millbrae or anywhere else has opened up their home to a homeless person or persons? As you say, “If we are going to solve homelessness everybody has to contribute, even if it makes us a little uncomfortable.” So why aren’t they contributing, even if it makes them uncomfortable. Perhaps if they opened their homes, others may follow. BTW, Mr. Keegan, what are you doing to contribute, even if it makes you a little uncomfortable?
