Reader Ken Hickmott’s letter in the Dec. 21 edition of the Daily Journal criticizes my letter in which I reported the horrific story of Palestinian terrorists deliberately murdering three Palestinian children in Gaza. He then castigates the Israeli military for the innocent Palestinian children that have been killed by their weapons. And I agree with Mr. Hickmott: the deaths of all these innocents are tragic. But let’s ask these questions: If Palestinians stopped rocket attacks upon Jewish communities, wouldn’t Israeli reprisals stop? And wouldn’t the Palestinian civilian casualties from these reprisals be minimized if Hamas and Islamic Jihad did not purposely fire their rockets from schools or hospitals or civilian apartment buildings?

Compassion and assistance
Editor,
Ken Hickman, Dec. 21, said about the Palestinians "they need our compassion and our assistance,” and that is understandable for the Palestinians who are not terrorists. However, Hickman’s unreasonable blaming of Israel is inexcusable, and that does nothing to help the Palestinians. The financial assistance that was given to Arafat was misdirected for his and his associates’ personal use. Right now Mrs. Arafat is living in Paris on the fortune diverted from assistance for the Palestinians, money which should go to the Palestinians. Too much of the financial assistance has been used for terrorism against Israel. Since Israel left Gaza the Palestinians have been sending rockets into southern Israel, and that needs condemnation rather than compassion.

Don’t run red lights
Editor,
This is in response to the letter about the red light cameras in San Mateo ("Red equals green in San Mateo” by T.J. Retsal in the Dec. 26 edition of the Daily Journal).
Mr. Retsal’s letter sounds a little bitter. Maybe it is because he did something that is illegal and has the potential to hurt or kill someone and he got caught. Even at 3 a.m. there is the possibility of hitting someone by running a red light. I think Mr. Retsal would be bitter if he had gotten caught speeding or running a red light and given a ticket by an officer.
Seems pretty simple to me: Mr. Retsal, don’t run the red light and you won’t get a ticket, but if you do — remember to smile for the camera.
