Belmont and Menlo Park are considering resolutions against Cargill’s proposed development in Redwood City. This development will pave over restorable Bay wetlands, building a community of 25,000 (the size of Menlo Park).
In response, some in Redwood City are upset with Belmont and Menlo Park for "meddling” in Redwood City affairs.
Redwood City, however, is not on an island. Cargill’s proposal is so huge it will impact the region. Traffic congestion, air quality, water supply issues and combating global warming are regional issues, not just Redwood City issues.

I attended the Belmont City Council meeting discussing the Cargill development. As a Redwood City citizen, I wanted to hear Belmont’s concerns. For example, Belmont, unlike Redwood City, has just one HIghway 101 exit, at Ralston Avenue. Belmont is concerned about emergency vehicles reaching Belmont residents, due to increased traffic congestion caused by urban sprawl onto the Bay as opposed to infill housing along transit corridors. Belmont is concerned about air quality, and increased bad air days, for its residents. The increases in bad air and traffic congestion will not be limited to just Redwood City.
Whether we pave over the Bay, or restore the land to wetlands, has huge repercussions beyond Redwood City. I urge Redwood City to welcome, listen to, and address our neighbors’ concerns.
